The Argentinian National Polo Finals

December 31, 2009

A trip to Argentina wouldn’t be complete without witnessing a Polo match firsthand.  In all honesty, we thought we should experience it and that we would chalk it up to a “see and experience it” occurrence.  Well, nothing could be more wrong!  We were in for quite a treat!  First of all, we were about to witness the two best teams in Argentina for the actual FINAL match…for the bragging rights as “Argentinian Polo Champion”.  That sounds very impressive since polo in Argentina is the equivalent to baseball in the United States. It is a national pastime and each match is an “event” to attend.

It seems that there is a whole “Polo” culture, to which are not privy.  There is unwritten dress code, champagne is the drink of choice and sales of “polo” clothing and accessories is serious business at the matches.  I won’t bore you with the rules or particulars of polo (nor could I even figure all the rules out!).  But, even as handicapped as we were with the lack of “polo” knowledge, we had an absolute blast.  The matches are exceptionally fast-paced and wildly exciting.  In the span of one match, we saw the following: a player thrown from his horse, a horse break its leg, an extra chukker (overtime), and two teams so evenly matched everyone was having a hard time predicting a winner.  Any one of the above occurrences would have been exciting in a single match, but to have them all occur in one match….WOW!

Corporate "Huts"

de campo muy grande!

Walking to our seats the honor guard trots by

Team Introductions -- televised on ESPN

Warming Up -- notice how the horse's tails are taped (no idea why)

Between chukks the field crew repairs divots and picks up horse dung!

Beautiful Day -- Our house is located one block from the big building on the left

Polo "Faceoff" after every point -- referee drops the ball and gallops away as fast as possible

Match in progress

With all the bumping it's surprising more players don't fall

A pause in the action?

The chase is on!

More action shots

So the bartender says..."Why such the long face?"

Taking it all in

Meg, how beautiful! And what a coincidence…we almost went to a polo match right here in Lakewood Ranch this past Sunday! Right down the street we have the famous Lakewood Ranch Polo Club!!! We were thinking about what to take for our tailgating adventure when the drizzle of rain, turned into something more serious, and we changed our plans! However, seeing you beautiful photography inspires me to “catch a match” and see how it compares to the indoor polo matches I attended years ago in the Chicago Armory…they were something! FAST, CLOSE-UP and mostly exciting! I will let you know how LR Polo Club measures up to your adventure!
