Feliz Dia de los Enamorados

February 18, 2010

or…Happy Valentine’s Day!  Isn’t that a mouthful??!!

(For all our Washington, DC friends, I apologize in advance for this post)

What a wonderful day it was for Valentine’s Day here in Buenos Aires.  The weather couldn’t have been better..sunny, warm…but not too warm, and relaxing! As it goes with most “holidays” here in Argentina, they are completely understated.  Not too much (if any) advertising, no hoopla really.  Friends from home came for a visit and brought us a much-wished-for box of Bisquick.  I had hoped that I would be able to make pancakes for the children for breakfast but after 4 stores, 2 bus rides, 1 trip to Chinatown, we had no luck locating maple syrup.  I will hold out for syrup before I make pancakes…although the natives are getting restless.

Our afternoon was filled with an a walk over to our neighborhood park, Parque Tres de Febrero, in Palermo.  We like this park because you can rent bikes, rowboats, paddleboats, horse carriages, walk through a beautiful rose garden. The park  it is well-shaded and has beautiful lakes in the middle of the 62 acres.  It was named after the date on which the governor of Buenos Aires, Juan Manuel de Rosas, was overthrown – 3 February 1852.  Manuel de Rosas was a very popular and began his rule uniting Argentina and creating a more effeciently run government.  However, by the end of his rule, he became known as a dictator whose rule through the violent killing of opponents.  This park land was confiscated when de Rosas was overthrown.  The park was designed and construction began in 1874.

Below are some picture of the park and the children enjoying the day.
